What is the lifespan of tensile fabric?

Regarding the lifespan of PVC tensile fabric, simply put, it's like a high-tech "shell" that can accompany a building for a considerable period. While it may not last for a hundred years like bricks and tiles, it is definitely a long-lasting "marathon runner" in the world of flexible materials.

Here are some key factors that determine how long it will last:

1. Normal Service Life

Under normal maintenance, high-quality PVC tensile fabric structures can typically last for 15 to 25 years, or even longer.
Early stage (0-10 years): In optimal condition, with bright colors and peak waterproof and tensile performance.
Mid-stage (10-20 years): Due to long-term exposure to sunlight and rain, the material may become slightly harder or discolored, but it can still perform its function.
Late stage (after 20 years): The coating may gradually thin, and the elasticity and toughness of the material will begin to decline. At this point, replacement or major repairs are usually necessary.

2. "Enemies" that Affect Longevity

Although PVC tensile fabric is very strong, some factors can quietly shorten its lifespan:
UV radiation: Sunlight is its biggest enemy. Long-term strong ultraviolet radiation will cause changes in the chemical components of the coating, leading to brittleness and yellowing of the material.
Air pollution and acid rain: In industrial areas or heavily polluted cities, chemical substances in the air will corrode the surface coating, making it easier for dust to accumulate and difficult to clean.
Extreme weather: Frequent strong typhoons and heavy snowstorms can cause significant stress, accelerating the "fatigue" of the internal fibers and shortening the lifespan.

3. The Role of the Surface "Protective Film"

To make PVC tensile fabric last longer, manufacturers usually apply a special "sunscreen layer" (usually called a topcoat) to the surface.
Self-cleaning function: This film is very smooth; rainwater washes away dust, preventing dirt from penetrating the fabric and causing decay.
Moisture retention: It prevents the loss of the underlying PVC components, keeping the material soft and less prone to cracking.

4. Simple Tips to Extend Lifespan

If you want this material to last for several more years, regular "check-ups" are crucial:
Regular cleaning: Wiping it down annually with clean water and a mild detergent to remove accumulated corrosive substances and bird droppings is the most cost-effective way to extend its lifespan.
Check the tension: The membrane material works by tension. If it's too loose, it will flap like a flag in strong winds, causing the fibers to break quickly; if it's too tight, it's prone to excessive wear and tear. Therefore, having a professional regularly check the tension is very important.
Repair small damages:  Repair small scratches or holes promptly to prevent moisture from penetrating the internal fibers and causing mold.
